Machine Tools
Machine tools are used to fabricate metal components from
raw pieces of metal. These tools generally require a electric power
source, but there are exceptions. They shape metal components by selectively
removing excess metal.
One of the most common machine tools is the lathe. These machines spin
a piece of metal at various speed settings, while a cutter is used to
evenly remove the unwanted portion. Many jewelers use these machines
in creating their designs.
Machine tools can be operated by hand or be connected to a computer
that can be programmed to control the cutting process. When extreme
precision is required, the computer-operated machines are often the
first choice. Some of these tools are capable of removing the metal
a micron at a time.
