Machine Tool History
The industrial revolution of the 19th century was the
beginning of machine tool history. Early machines were built to help
European and American craftsman improve their products and their productivity.
Many of these early machines have modern cousins that aren’t very
different in design.
An ancient tool that has become synonymous with machine tool history
is the lathe. This lathe was originally made to turn by use of a foot
pedal that had to be constantly pumped in order to maintain rotation.
During the industrial revolution a rudimentary engine was attached to
this device, allowing the operator stand still while cutting.
Another staple of machine tool history is the horizontal boring machine.
Invented by John Wilkinson of England in 1775, this tool made precision
boring possible. Because of this machine the steam engine became much
more efficient, which helped push the industrial revolution into high
gear.
